Hey everyone! Just wanted to let you know about a queer hip-hop/indie/electro/club party in Philly called Make Yr Break. It's normally the second saturday of every month at the BubbleHouse, (3404 Sansom st) but this month we are doing a New Year's Party!! We'll have live performances by underground hip-hop acts Sgt. Sass, Benni E, and 3x A Lady, plus dance troupe SnapCrotch and Dj Bunnystyle all night long, and some awesome partying gifts that we made. If you are anywhere in the area, you really need to be at this party.

check out myspace.com/makeyrbreak for more info and to download my dj mixes.

also, there is another queer hip-hop dance party the last wednesday of every month called The Break Off, which is at a new Philly dance club (that has amazing sound..) called the Barbary (951 Frankford and Delaware Ave.) Our debut party is Dec.26th so if your family is driving you nuts, come dance with your chosen family, eh?

details for that at myspace.com/thebreakoffparty

Ok, sorry for the rambling promoting, just thought folks in the area would like to know.
happy holidays, everyone!
The Sexist Homophobic Hip Hop Question.

The Sexist Homophobic Hip Hop Question.

This is a small part of an interview I conducted with Out Black singer NHOJJ www.nhojj.com
and
Out Hip Hop artist BARON. www.baron.com

It’s near the beginning of our conversation on Homophobia in the African American communities as in our society in general. The whole interview will broadcast on Monday the 16th on 99.5 fm WBAI and stream live on <a href='http://www.wbai.org'>WBAI.ORG</a>
The broadcast will be archived 24 hours later on the http://archive.wbai.org/
Now on to the portion of the interview.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Pedro: I saw a great documentary on PBS called “Beyond Beats and Rhymes.” And it’s a critique of Hip Hop by a straight Black man who loves Hip Hop but was concerned by the homophobia and sexism he finds in it. He was talking to people like Fifty Cent; really big name rappers and when he tried to he bring up the issue of homophobia… well, he tried. One of these men actually got up and walked out of the room. He could not talk about it. Busta Rhymes! Whom I think is great. I love his stuff. But he could not talk about it. He had to walk out of the room. What is that about? Enlighten me.

Nhojj: Well we were just reading a magazine and they had a list of suspect D.L. rappers and a lot of the guys you talk about and we hear; Busta Rhymes for one was on the list. And Baron has a really cool theory.

Baron: Well it’s a small theory but it’s not profitable. It’s not profitable to be an Out homosexual artist. So until we find a way that it’s profitable… Because that’s the base line of Hip Hop; they say it’s the music but it’s the money. So until there’s responsibility around it the conversation about D.L. will continue. Because of course there are homosexual Hip Hop artists, of course.

Pedro: I’m in the Punk Rock scene. And when the first smaller labels were bought up by major labels they were criticized for being sellouts. Bands that sighed were called sellouts. “This is not Punk Rock. Signing to a major record label is Not Punk Rock.” Meanwhile in Hip Hop when these small independent Hip Hop labels were being bought up by major record companies that’s when it stopped being conscious and positive and you started seeing Gang banging and excuse my language bitches and Hoes in thongs on the videos. And Jesse Jackson and all these major black leaders never once said “This is bad. We are losing our culture. This is our culture and it’s being bought up by corporations.”

Baron: But then yes this is our culture then this is our culture that’s projecting these images. You can blame the people that pay it but if you’re doing it you’re self, then you should blame yourself for it. If you’re doing it for the dollar…

Pedro: Yea, but what if you’re not going to get sighed? In the documentary “Beyond Beats and Rhymes” one young man did a rhyme that was brilliant and political and smart and positive. And when the man doing the documentary asked “Why don’t you do that? (Instead of Rapping about killing other Black men.) the guy said, “They don’t want to hear that shit.”

Baron: But who is that “they?”

Pedro: That are the record heads who run the record labels.

Baron: And “they” are the people who are buying it.

Nhojj: I think there are a lot of people who are buying it and I think there is a market for it. There catering to a market.

Pedro: I agree with that. Yes.

Nhojj: So I think some how you need to change what the ideal is. I think that’s what the ideal is; a strong, macho, what ever the words are. I get a lot of women, I get a lot of money. It’s an ideal in our society. And I think Hip Hop just is kind of a tool to create that fantasy. It’s a fantasy.

Pedro: I publish a zine called Boots and Roots. It’s a Punk Rock Zine. And the theme for the next issue was inspired by a friend of mine and its Family, Unity, Strength, Music and Never Being Alone Again. So those are our Punk Rock Values. We’re all in this together.
But I found myself thinking, “How am I going to write about strength for this zine?
So I looked up strength, I Googled Strength! And do you know what Tarot cards are? The Image of strength in the tarot is a lion and women or a lion and a child. That’s strength. It was one of the four cardinal virtues. And what did that mean by strength? They weren’t referring to physical strength. They were referring to spiritual strength: the thing inside you that keeps you going no matter what tries to stop you. And I thought, “That’s Punk Rock!”
So what is strength in the Hip Hop World? What does strength mean there?

Nhojj: I think there are almost two Hip Hop Worlds. There’s the older, kind of more grounded one that grew up with Hip Hop when it was under ground and I think for them strength was… Um…

Baron: Strength was in the expression. There wasn’t a voice of the inner city at that time when Hip Hop came into play. So it was like “Thank God I’ve got some where to express my political views, what’s happening to me socially … um…

Nhojj: Strength was in the expression; stating your truth.

Pedro: It’s like a jungle sometimes.
It makes me wonder,
how I keep,
from going under.”

(Laughter from every one.)

Pedro: That was strength!!! And it’s still a classic.

Nhojj: Then you have the other Hip Hop World which strength is how many women you can get, how many people you kill, how much time you spent in jail.

After this we move on to discuss issues of warriorhood, manhood, and men wanting to love each other regardless of weather we are Gay or Straight.

Please let us know what you think about the show at www.outfm.org.

HIP HOP and HIV Intervention

hi folks,

as an HIV health educator my agency and I are trying to cater to groups who listen to or relate to hip hop music in general. While saying "hip hop" is very general, it particualry means to those who enjoy going to clubs spinning hip hop and r&b, or hip hop and reggae, or any other combination with hip hop. the reason to focus on such a target is impart due to our agency primarily targeting asian men who frequent clubs that typically play dance music and working on interventions for them. I personally see the divergence of these two interest groups and both holding different cultural norms. Allow me to cut to the chase...

i was hoping some of you all could help me (yes to theorize the idea), but to help me process these questions: could hip hop music and HIV intervention work for Asian Pacific Islander gay men who listen to this kind of music? Do Asian and Pacific Islander gay men relate to mainstream hip hopy lyrics promoting various different sexual connotations?

if this sounds too general please let me know and I will add...

thanks in advance!!

article on Byron Hurt's film
--------------------
Hip-hop and sexuality
--------------------

LIer's look at misogyny and homophobia a key note among
music-driven movies

BY JAN STUART
STAFF WRITER

January 18, 2006

In the society of hip-hoppers, there are some places that you
just don't go.

Take the time when Smithtown-born filmmaker Byron Hurt asked
rapper Busta Rhymes to explain the link between machismo and
homoeroticism in hip-hop. Rhymes was so unwilling to go there he got up
and walked out of the room.

This agitated flight is captured in a new documentary that Hurt
will unveil at this year's Sundance Film Festival - which kicks off
tomorrow - entitled "Beyond Beats and Rhymes: A Hip-Hop Head Weighs in
on Manhood in Hip-Hop Culture."

In this feisty hour-long film, Hurt asks all the prickly
questions you may have been afraid to ask surrounding the
hyper-masculine culture of hip-hop. The Long Island filmmaker pokes and
prods an array of musicians, producers, fans and authorities,
confronting them on the genre's ultra-violence, sexism, misogyny and
homophobia.

Russell Simmons' "cop-out"

Among the other notables who had their feathers ruffled by
Hurt's crusading camera was hip-hop entrepreneur and social activist
Russell Simmons, who, when asked to weigh in on the sexual
objectification of women in hip-hop, replied, "I think we have to
challenge sexism as it stands in the community, and not the poetry that
is a reflection of it ... I can't address every issue because I don't
have the equipment."

The 36-year-old Hurt seemed unconvinced. "I thought it was a bit
of a cop-out," he said from his home in Central Islip. "Here is someone
... the Rockefeller drug laws are important to, voting and registration
is important to, reparation is important to. He's a spokesperson for
PETA. But he's not willing to delve into issues of sexism and respect
for women. It's reflective of the general belief system a lot of men
have, that it's not a priority."

Hurt himself bought into that belief system well into his
college days at Northeastern University, where he attended on an
athletic scholarship and was asked to lead workshops in a gender
violence prevention program.

"I thought it was a violence protection program for young
people, which is much different," recalls the former Central Islip High
School star quarterback. "When I found out that they wanted me to go out
to colleges across the country and talk to athletes about sexism and
violence against women, my initial thought was, 'What are my boys going
to think about this? What is my father going to think about me?'
Honestly, I didn't know any man who was doing this type of thing."

A member of one of Northeastern's jockiest fraternities at the
time, Hurt nearly turned down the offer. "Automatically when you start
talking about gender issues, sexism, misogyny and homophobia," he
explains, "the first thing that gets called into question is your
heterosexual manhood. What kind of man are you? Why are you doing this?"

Embedded homophobia

Some of the film's more surprising sound bites come from black
drag queens, who profess to being turned on by gay-bashing lyrics, and
young women, who insist that male hip-hop performers' denigration of
women is not referring to them. "It goes to show how deeply embedded
homophobia and sexism are," Hurt says.

While pop music and its social significance has always been a
prevailing factor in the youth-energized film festival in Park City,
Utah, "Beyond Beats and Rhymes" signals a boom year for music-driven
documentaries.

Vancouver: Increase the Peace! Hip-Hop Show and Forum

coming up on Nov. 18th ...

Increase the Peace!
Should the Skytrain Police be packin a piece?

A hiphop show and community forum.

On deck:

Kinnie Starr

Curtis Clearsky

Skeena Reece

Corvid

T.t.

In.Stead

Busy Bee

Rupinder Sidhu

DJ Su Commandante

plus some local youth talent:

Rapture Rising

Roh Nikju

Jay J

Young Chris

Check it: Translink has announced that a new, armed Skytrain police force is taking effect on the Lower Mainland's transit system. There is also talk of installing cameras on buses and increased surveillance.

Already facing discrimination and harassment before this announcement, the implications for youth (especially youth of colour, low-income youth, and hip-hop headz) are serious. A coalition of concerned youth and their allies are coming together to address this issue in a community forum, using the medium of hip- hop, to share ideas and develop a strategy, because
WE DON'T WANNA SEE KIDS GETTING CAPPED!

Does having guns on trains packed full of people strike you as a Bad idea?
Come and develop solutions with us.
Some of VanCity's finest underground MCs will be throwing down.

Location: Open Studios (252 E 1st Avenue) take a bus or skytrain to Main/Terminal area
Time: 8pm - get there early, it's gonna be packed

This is a beef-free event.

Yes to: conscious MCs, unity in diversity, peace, and justice

No to: verbal or physical violence, alcohol/drugs,
sexist/racist/homophobic behavior, tuff-guy whack ego-pumping MCs, weapons.

Hip Hop Scholarship--call for submissions

For all the artist-scholars out there:

CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS

The Words Beats & Life Global Journal of Hip-Hop Culture is currently
requesting the submission of content for Volume 2 Issue 2-4.
www.wblinc.org

Process of Submitting
All submissions are accepted on a continuous basis and need not be
limited to the themes outlined below. Please send all submissions to:
submissions@wblinc.org

Schedule of Topics and Due Dates:

July Volume 2 issue 2
WB&L Journal

1. Topic: One Day it Will All Make Sense: The Roots of a Culture
Call for submission: 9/31/05 Submission due: 11/25/05
Early b-boys like the rest of the hip-hop community found themselves
looking for inspiration in multiple forms and mediums. In many ways
the early b-boys reflected and resisted these cultural phenomena in
creating the dance form later called break dancing. Volume 2 issue 2
is
focused on understanding all of the early influences of upon hip-hop.
The b-boy is not an anomaly in hip-hop, but rather a physical
representation of the rebellious and eclectic nature of the culture.

October Volume 2 issue 3
WB&L Journal

2. Topic: Spinning the Wheels of Steel: DJ's Fading and Mixing
Planets into Harmony
Call for submission: 11/26/05 Submission due: 2/6/06
In contemporary hip-hop culture, the DJ in some instances is as
prominent as the MC. From the mix tapes, to the battles, it is the DJ
who decides what gets heard. It is the DJ who creates one continuous
vibe that guides the listeners into becoming active participants in
the
culture of hip-hop. The DJ makes the party hot, or the mix tape
popular, and is the true director of the hip-hop orchestra. This has
been the case from the very beginning of hip-hop's emergence in the
late 70s. Submissions for Volume 2 issue 3 should reflect the history,
relevance and innovations of the DJ over the past 40 years. The
submissions need not be confined to the hip-hop DJ but can include DJ
from throughout the Diaspora. The DJs can also represent different
musical traditions along with technical papers about the affect of
innovations in equipment upon the ability of a DJ to move a crowd.

January Volume 2 issue 4
WB&L Journal

3. Topic: City Full of Walls: Graffiti and Mural in Urban Landscapes
Call for submission: 2/7/06 Submission due: 5/20/06
Volume 2 issue 4 is a visual issue featuring graffiti crews, visual
artists and photographers from around the world. Submissions about
the history of graffiti, murals and styles will also be accepted.
Submissions related to best practices for creating murals in
communities will also be accepted. If you live in a city with
phenomenal murals, tags, train cars and throw ups or are an individual
artist, photographer of hip-hop culture, part of an organization or
crew, this issue is for you.

Hey ya'll... 2 Questions:

1. I threw a club at the (now dark) Parlour a couple of years ago called Hard Ass. I signed some waiver by these guys following around Cazwell (he performed) doing a documentary. Anyone know if that was Pick Up The Mic?

2. I can't find dates for premieres of this film anywhere except it's opening at the Toronto film fest. I know this shit has got to be out in LA at some point! Info??

Introduction for my fellow Hip-Hop Artists and DJ's

Kayne West on homophobia

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20050818/ap_en_mu/people_kanye_west

NEW YORK - Kanye West says "gay" has become an antonym to hip-hop — and that it needs to be stopped.

During an interview for an MTV special, the 27-year-old rapper launched into a discussion about hip-hop and homosexuality while talking about "Hey Mama," a song on his upcoming album, "Late Registration."

West says that when he was young, people would call him a "mama's boy."

"And what happened was, it made me kind of homophobic, 'cause it's like I would go back and question myself," West says on the show, "All Eyes on Kanye West," set to air Thursday night (10:30 p.m. ET).

West says he changed his ways, though, when he learned one of his cousins was gay.

"It was kind of like a turning point when I was like, `Yo, this is my cousin. I love him and I've been discriminating against gays.'"

West says hip-hop was always about "speaking your mind and about breaking down barriers, but everyone in hip-hop discriminates against gay people." He adds that in slang, gay is "the opposite, the exact opposite word of hip-hop."

Kanye's message: "Not just hip-hop, but America just discriminates. And I wanna just, to come on TV and just tell my rappers, just tell my friends, `Yo, stop it.'"

West, whose debut disc "The College Dropout" won a Grammy for best rap album, will see his second record in stores on Aug. 30.

I read about kink & radical politics in the kweerwords tribe and it inspired me to put up some music... here's a crosspost:

Here's a link of some spiritual S&M spoken word on improv music--
http://www.angelfire.com/dc/swirlee/all-tied.mp3
(copy the address and paste in your browser bar-- clicking thru doesn't work with my provider)

and in written form:
http://home.graffiti.net/swirlee/writings/freedom.html

here's what it says:
FREEDOM

--
You indulge in control & coercion
You get off on being bound
You like to helmet Nature
Force straps gagging common Ground.

That's the techno in you, boy
that knows the prison,
and the struggle,
and the rape.

This gentle planet, boy
and all you thought
is take, take, take.

Boy, you got it coming
cuz We're all tied together
the machines we make,
the balls we break,
whatever it takes
til we awake!
cuz we're all tied together!

Queer Hip Hop in Oakland?

I know Oakland has a big hip hop scene... perhaps people from this list would be interested in posting hip hop concerts, events and parties on the Oakland Dykes and Queers Tribe?

I've been surfing around Tribe trying to find a tribe for Dykes and Queers in Oakland and have found nothing. So I'm starting an Oakland Dykes and Queers tribe. This will be a place where we can have discussions and publicize queer events and parties going on in Oakland. So join us at: oaklanddykesandqueers.tribe.net/
